Christian Amelung & Johanna Bodenstein Amelung

1. Amelung, Johann Heinrich CHRISTIAN * 26. Sep. 1832 Seesen am Harz
+ 06. Aug. 1903 Pilot Knob, Iron County, MO, USA
Chris Amelung was born 26 Sep 1832 in Klein Rhüden (now combined with Seesen), Niedersachsen, Germany to
Heinrich "Christian" Amelunke and Johanne Marie Friederike Klusmann. The family immigrated to Gordonville, Cape
Girardeau County, Missouri during 1846 - 1847 where Chris immediately began an apprenticeship at Iron Mountain,
Missouri for Mechanics - he would eventually work as a mechanic for the furnace at Pilot Knob, Missouri where there
was a large iron ore mine. On 05 Jan 1854, Chris married Johanna Marie Magdalene Bodenstein, the daughter of Johann
"Heinrich" Christian Bodenstein and Johanna Marie "Dorothee" Achtermann. Together they had 11 children but only 6
lived to adulthood. Chris died on 06 Aug 1903 in Pilot Knob, Iron County, Missouri from paralysis. Family stories
indicate he had a rare and fatal skin cancer.

Iron County Register,  Ironton MO; Thursday, Dec. 12, 1918

Mrs. Johanna Amelung died at Pilot Knob, Mo., Wednesday, December 4, 1918; Mrs. Johanna Amelung, nee
Bodenstein
, aged 85 years and 10 months.
The subject of this memorial was born in Yerze, Brunswick, (Jerze, 31167 Bockenem), Braunschweig, Germany
and there reared to maidenhood. In 1855 she came to America, and one year later, at Pilot Knob, was united in Marriage
 to Christian Amelung. To this union were born six children all of whom survive her: William and Henry of Granite City, Ill.;
John and Herman, of Pilot Knob; Edward H. of Indianapolis; and Mrs. Ed Waters, of Festus, Mo. Twenty-eight
grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren have descended from the happy union of sixty years ago.
In 1903 Christian Amelung, the consort of the deceased, after nearly fifty years of connubial felicity, passed to the Great
Beyond, regretted by all who knew his honest and kindly nature. Since his death the widow has lived in the care, welfare
and happiness of the family, and the children have made good in all the essentials of life and character, vindicating the love
and teaching of their parents. They were all present to pay the last sad tribute to the mother who bore them. To them I tender
my sympathy in the hour of their bereavement.

They come to America when he was 40 years old. They sailed on the Bark Diana from Bremen to New Orleans arriving November 11. 1844.
Master of the bark was Mr. Bayer. It is assumed that they came up the Mississippi to Cape Girardeau by steamboat because many were

was west of his brother Henry and is now known as the Henry Peetz farm. John Julius was naturalized May 06 1850. He was listed as
a turner and small farmer in Germany.
He buying 35 acres of land 01.03.1843 (Kown as Bunker Hill located approximately one mile west  of St. James United Church of Christ)

Here the story over Henry Nothdurft´s escape from Germany

Henry escaped from Germany in a large chest with a false bottom to avoid three years compulsory military service according to family history. The chest labeled "drygoo "drygoods" was taken to the port of Hannover and loaded on a ship ownd an operated by a relative. The relative fed and watered him secretly until the ship was 50 miles from shore before he was let out of the chest is still in existence in Gape Girardeau County, Missouri and owned by Jane Shinn. The voyage took 14 weeks and the ship landed in new Orleans. Henry was naturalized on 27.11.1848. He married Caroline Kempe of Berel in Braunschweig. He lived near his brother on another claim which we need to lacote. He died March 1904 in Missouri.

The mother Mary was living with his brother John Julius in 1850 (age 70) according to the U.S. census, but she does appear in the 1860 census. Betreff: One of your cousins in America

Hello,

We are so happy that Becky and Randy have found you. I am Becky's cousin too.
My mother was Ida Bertha Bock daughter of Frederick "Fritz" Bock.
My Nothdurft family came from Rhuden, 4 K from Sessen and I visited Rhuden and Berel in 1980 but did not find anyone.
Later I found a researcher in Braunswig who searched the church records in Rhuden -- St. Martins Church. I have my family history back to 1580's.
Later I found a genealogist -- Hans Nothdurft in Hanover, who maybe related to me, and he found more records on my family.
My ancestor who came to America in 1848 John Julius Nothdurft was married to a Brennecke. The Nothdurft's also married into the Probst family.
My wife and I visited Rhuden again in 2001 and also Entger near Bramsche near Osnabruck where my wife's family -- Wessel came from before they arrived in America.

I am now retired and my hobby is genealogy and history.
Since I was busy with my family I encouraged Vera to do the Bock family. She has done a wonderful job.

I looked at your website of Berel and it is great, wonderful, very informative, etc.

Thank you,

I wish I spoke deutsche. I took one course at the University a couple of years ago.

Your Cousin,
